20 Bridges Manhattan and Lake Tahoe Swim
20 Bridges Manhattan and Lake Tahoe Swim
Michella Thomas, UC San Diego Master's swimmer and coach, has two upcoming open-water marathon swims and is hoping to raise funds for UC San Diego Basic Needs services.
The first swim is the 20 Bridges Around Manhattan on June 2nd. This is a 28.5-mile (48.5-kilometer) swim around Manhattan Island traditionally completed in a counter-clockwise direction. The swim around Manhattan is part of the famed Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, together with the English Channel (between England and France), which Michella completed on June 20, 2021 and Catalina Channel (in California), which Michella completed on Sept. 13, 2013. Though considerably longer in distance than the other two swims, 20 Bridges generally takes less time as it is scheduled with advantageous tidal currents (i.e. like running a downhill marathon). The start time of the swim is 5:45pm and we anticipate to finish around 3:30 am. Michella is swimming this in a tandem format (side by side) with her friend and training partner, Kelley Schall.
The second swim is the length of Lake Tahoe on August 5th. This is a marathon swim with a distance of 21.3 miles, and the added components of fresh water, altitude of 6,230 feet, swimming in the dark, and potential surface conditions (i.e. wind, currents) are what make this swim very challenging.
Please join Michella in supporting students and UC San Diego Basic Needs Initiatives.
