As COVID-19 impacts all aspects of life here in San Diego, we have had to make many difficult choices. UC San Diego’s in-person events have been altered for safety for the foreseeable future and this includes Luau 28. In light of these changes, we made the decision to go virtual for the 28th Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational program, while remaining an in-person surf contest on the beach this year. This means that the bulk of the fundraising will occur online.
To all of our current 2021 sponsors, thank you. We are so thrilled to welcome you back to the beach this year. We are Surfing for a Cure to raise philanthropic support for research, teaching and clinical care in San Diego. All event proceeds will benefit Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
Your partnership allows us to explore ways that we can make this year as successful as ever; we remain passionately committed to supporting transformative cancer research. Thank you to each of you for your dedication to a future where cancer is a thing of the past.

The Mission and Vision of Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health:
Our mission is to save lives by transforming cancer prevention, detection, and care. Our vision is to make personalized cancer medicine a reality by creating, translating, and disseminating exceptional cancer science and medicine. Proceeds of the luau provide critical funding for the vital and urgent work of Moores Cancer Center.
Our unique "bench-to-bedside" approach to cancer research and patient care supports the broadest range of cancer activities in the San Diego region. From research in molecular genetics to the most advanced treatments, Moores Cancer Center is at the forefront of the fight against cancer, developing promising new therapies and making them available to patients with cancer throughout the region.
Our model for providing patient care features a multidisciplinary team approach. These teams include specialists from a variety of disciplines such as medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, as well as pathology, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, nursing, social work, genetic counseling, and more. They meet regularly to discuss the best options available for each patient. Using the advice from this group of experts, patients can then decide with their primary physician on the best course of treatment.
