Patients both in our community and across the US seek out the heart transplant program at Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and the Cardiovascular Institute at UC San Diego Health. Tackling the most challenging cases of heart disease, it continues to demonstrate the nation’s best survival rates and top national ranking.

While UC San Diego Health strives to make life-saving medical treatments available to all, the financial aspects of health care treatment can be challenging and stressful. The Finkelstein Family Heart Transplant Patient Assistance Fund provides financial support to eligible patients and their families who have financial need to cover additional expenses such as travel and lodging associated with their medical care.

Below are examples of the kinds of services you can help make possible

$50 Family Meal at the Café

• Every dollar counts when your loved one is sick and in the hospital. The last thing you want to think about is where your next meal will come from and how much it will cost. Families can grab a hot meal on the first-floor cafes at UC San Diego Medical Center and Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health in La Jolla.

$250 One-Way Flight to San Diego

• Following surgery, recovery occurs in the intensive care unit and cardiac rehabilitation, which could involve a stay of up three weeks. We know that lengthy hospital stays can be a tough journey and studies show that having family nearby and able to participate in care plans leads to better clinical outcomes.

$500 Five Night Stay at La Jolla Family House

• Lodging for five nights in a two-bedroom apartment at La Jolla Family House, a home away from home for families of patients undergoing critical or long-term care at UC San Diego Health and within walking distance of the La Jolla Medical Campus.

$1000 Champion for One Patient

• Flexibility is the greatest gift. A gift of this amount is roughly equal to what is necessary for one patient and their loved ones to cover unexpected expenses including medical equipment, medication, temporary accommodations, meals, transportation and other medical expenses essential to transplant or post-donation related care not otherwise covered by the individual’s insurance.

$5000 Champion for Five Patients

• Your generosity at this level is approximately equal to what is needed to provide up to five patients and their families with much needed financial support before, during and after life-saving care.
