Refugee and Immigrant Health

Launched in 2017, the Refugee and Immigrant Health (RIH) unit at the Center for Community Health within the UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, serves as an institutional and community-centered resource hub.

We aim to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, differences in health outcomes in our community and their root causes, including social determinants of health. Our mission is to cocreate culturally responsive approaches that promote health equity and well-being in refugee and immigrant communities. Our vision is a world in which everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity or socioeconomic background, has a fair and just opportunity for wellness and health. Refugee and immigrant communities need our support to be able to access the resources and care they need to live healthy and prosperous lives in our region and beyond.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS:

    • Implement community-led, culturally affirming programs that are aligned with community priorities to address short- and long-term needs.
    • Train system-level providers, we can ensure refugee and immigrant communities receive culturally affirming care and services.
  • Promote Culturally Responsive and Affirming Partnerships
    • Build collaborative, coordinated and multisector partnerships that integrate data and the experiences of the communities we seek to serve.
    • Offer training, resources and culturally-affirming leadership and workforce development opportunities to community-based organizations (CBOs) and ethnic CBOs in order to enhance operational capacity and sustainability.
  • Drive Community-Centered Research and Communication
