Description
Fostering academic excellence at UC San Diego.
UC San Diego Black Alumni Scholarship Fund
The Black Alumni Scholarship Fund was established in 1983 by the UC San Diego Black Alumni Council and transferred to The San Diego Foundation in 1998 due to Proposition 209. Since its inception, the Black Alumni Scholarship Fund has provided more than $802,000 in support to over 350 scholars studying engineering, mathematics and science or arts, humanities and social sciences. The Black Alumni Scholarship Fund continues to expand UC San Diego’s capacity to welcome more brilliant Black students into our Triton community.
In memory of Dr. Lennon "Len" Goins, who would have celebrated his 70th birthday on October 11, we invite you to make a gift in support of his vision of educational opportunity and future excellence of UC San Diego. Your gift directly supports the higher education aspirations of motivated and talented Black students, and reaffirms our commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive university.
More about BASF
The Black Alumni Scholarship Fund is designed to continue to assist in increasing the acceptance of offers of admission of Black students at UC San Diego and prepare them for graduate school and professional careers. Over the last five years, more than 130 scholarships have been awarded directly by The San Diego Foundation to first year admitted students. The $2,500 awards are renewed annually for up to four years.
Scholarships are awarded to admitted Black students who are committed to social engagement and want to make a difference in their communities. As part of the program, scholars are matched with UC San Diego alumni mentors who share tips about academic and career paths as well as engaging in experiential learning opportunities such as research, internships and study abroad. In addition, the program connects scholars with a network of resources such as the Black Resource Center’s Student Success Institute and learning communities as well as tutoring at the Teaching and Learning Commons.
BASF Coast to Coast
There are two donors, one from the east coast and one from the west coast who have pledged $10,000 each, that will match up to $10,000 in donations from each side of the country. The dividing line is the Mississippi River, this will be a fun competition between East and West and help us to meet and hopefully exceed our goal.
Additionally for Los Angeles donors, there will be a very exciting closing event in November. Your donation will get you included in the drawing for attendance. More details coming on this fun event at a premium location in Los Angeles soon.
