Who We Are

The Student Promoted Access Center for Education & Service (SPACES) works to address social and educational inequalities by providing resources to first generation, low-income, foster, undocumented, and refugee (or of refugee family) youth at UC San Diego and in San Diego county.

As one of the three components of SPACES, the Student Initiated Access Programs & Services (SIAPS) provides local middle school, high school, and community college students the opportunity to come to UC San Diego and other universities in Southern California to expose them to various possibilities of pursuing higher education. SIAPS supports various UCSD student organizations who coordinate pre-college student programs through various funding opportunities, mentorship and training, and advising for programs such as high school conferences, shadow days, career days, and after school programs. SIAPS also coordinates their own programs that invites local high school students to participate in the College Tour Program that tours them to other Southern California universities and/or a week-long summer residential program, the annual Summer Summit. These programs has produced high school leaders that later intend to apply to UCSD and continue the program as undergraduates.

Students who participate in the various programs while in high school and are accepted to UCSD are invited to attend SPACES’ Overnight Program done through the Student Programs Ignited for Community Empowerment & Education (SPICEE), the student coordinated yield program that extends to Triton Admit Day. Students who submit their intent to register to UCSD will be part of SPACE’s Booklending Program, guaranteeing them books throughout their undergraduate career done through the Student Initiated Programs for Holistic Retention (SIPHR), the third component of the Center.
