Help Us Meet the Healing Foods Program Match
Researchers and clinicians at the Moores Cancer Center have been investigating the diet-cancer link since 1993. During the last 25 years, they have found evidence of important dietary and lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risks of cancer, assist in coping with a cancer diagnosis and its therapies, and enhance life after treatment into survivorship.
Focusing on Nutrition
Through our program, participants receive evidence-based nutrition information and obtain accurate state-of-the-science information from nutrition professionals. Food demonstration classes and seminars each month focus on a nutrition feature. A roaming Nourishment and Education Cart provides recipes and a chance to discuss nutrition services with a registered dietician.
Inspiring Healthy Eating
Class participants have the opportunity to taste new foods, learn how to prepare recipes, and plan healthy meals where most if not all recipe ingredients can be purchased at a local grocery store. Participants receive educational handouts that include the class recipes with nutrient calculations. The goal of each class is to inspire healthy eating with easy, delicious and accessible menus tailored to each phase of the cancer journey. Many participants have reported that they successfully prepared the recipes for family and friends, sharing with them not only the food, but also the awareness of creating a healthy lifestyle, and the joy of cooking together and sharing food together.

What Participants Are Saying
“The classes have taught me how to make quick and nutritious meals and suggested shortcuts (I’ve added cooking appliances and tools). I’ve gotten more interested in preparing and eating fresh foods that will have positive impacts on my health and will help me fight cancer. This nutrition series needs to be fully integrated into the UCSD program. I recommend it to every cancer patient.” —2018 Healing Foods class participant
“Instructors and team were ROCK STARS. We learned so much and have a better handle on how we can be better caregivers.” —2018 Healing Foods class participant
“This program combines healing foods and wellness education in an engaging format for patients, and we are extraordinarily fortunate to have this program as a resource for our patients at Moores Cancer Center.” —Barbara Parker, MD, Senior Deputy Director of Cancer Medicine, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center
