Skaggs: Center for Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery and Development
There is an urgent need to help more than 1 billion people worldwide infected by illnesses known as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). They are “neglected” because most of the afflicted live in extreme poverty and are therefore unprofitable populations for the pharmaceutical industry to address.
Many of the afflicted are also children facing life-threatening or disabling conditions in their most vulnerable years.
UC San Diego is better positioned than any other institution in the world to help them. While many universities also have high-ranking medical schools and schools of pharmacy, no other campus also features one of the world’s foremost marine science authorities. This makes our center a rare and powerful resource.
The Center for Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery and Development, launched by Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, is an invaluable global resource for advancing new therapies from their earliest stages of molecular testing to regulatory approval.
The truth about neglected tropical diseases is that the world is getting smaller every day. We are a global community, and as the pace of migration intensifies, parasitic diseases will be on the move too. Whenever and wherever these conditions occur, we want to be ready. We need your help to get there.
