Student Run Free Clinic
We will continue to accept gifts throughout the remainder of the campaign, because every dollar we raise above our goal will go right back into supporting the Student-Run Free Clinic and the services we provide to the community.
At the UC San Diego Student-Run Free Clinic, we have a unique opportunity as students to work with the underserved population in San Diego. The free clinic is a program that was founded in 1997 by faculty and students in order to address the needs of our community’s uninsured population. While for students this is an opportunity to improve clinical skills and help the community, for the patients the experience is unparalleled.
The clinic currently serves 2,000 patients from our community who otherwise would not have access to these resources. The Student-Run Free Clinic is run almost entirely by volunteer students and physicians and funded primarily through philanthropic gifts and grants. Through these, we are able to provide most of our patients with their exams and medications. Every once in a while, we have a patient whose needs exceed our means.
Juan* is one of our wonderful and deserving patients. Despite having well controlled diabetes, he recently had an infection which required an amputation, making it difficult for him to return to work. In order to help Juan return to a full and happy life, we are hoping to provide him with a new above-the-knee prosthesis.
Many of the patients we see for orthopedic concerns have been waiting for months because we’re a specialty clinic. When patients need a cane or walker, the money is raised by the volunteers who keep the free clinic running. The volunteers sell snacks and drinks at the clinic sites to pay for canes and walkers, but a prosthetic leg costs over $9,000. That’s why we’re asking for your help. Thanks to a generous matching gift challenge from the IV Society, every dollar you give will be matched to help us reach our goal.
Being a medical student involved with the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic gives the amazing experience of working with such grateful patients from the first week of medical school and beyond. The free clinic truly embodies the principle of the patient as teacher. We learn so much from patients like Juan - not just about medicine, but about life, struggle, compassion, trust, and the human experience. We are so grateful, in advance, for your generosity in helping us give Juan a new beginning.
