Global TIES: Fiji Kindergarten Project
About Fiji Kindergarten Project
Our mission is to build a kindergarten constructed from salvaged shipping containers for a remote village on the island of Taveuni, Fiji. Our project aims to address the social justice issues of education, poverty, and environmental sustainability in a replicable model that can be used to increase access to education.
Who We Are
We are a group of innovative thinkers at UCSD using humanitarian engineering to make socially responsible changes in the world. As students, we have united our many different backgrounds and academic disciplines through the Global TIES program to focus our efforts on designing an affordable and sustainable kindergarten out of recycled shipping containers, with our pilot project in Fiji.
We have chosen to focus on implementing this project in Fiji because of our strong relationship with the non-profit organization, The Loloma Foundation. Loloma has established strong connections in the Fijian community through their work in providing medical, dental, and health aid to the South Pacific since 2001. We have worked with Dr. Hendricks, founding board member and president of Loloma, to define the challenges and innovative solutions in Fiji involving the lack of early educational infrastructures.
Why This Matters
Although the Fijian government has initiated several policies in the past decade to promote early education, there have been minimal increases in funding, resources, or infrastructure for these purposes. Children often walk up to 5 miles each way just to reach a kindergarten center, posing not only safety risks, but also health risks. With our low-cost, sustainable, and easy-to-implement design, we are able to address these issues and help reduce some of the risks associated with access to early education.
After the video above was created, we received an update about the geography of our site and learned that we might need to rework the shipping container design. We are currently in the process of modeling a new structure for the kindergarten, and we look forward to sharing it with you as soon as the design is finalized!
How You Can Help
Our design is complete, and we are finishing up writing construction manuals for each element of our project. Thanks to the Loloma Foundation, we have finalized a site for the kindergarten on the island of Taveuni, Fiji. In order to implement the first phase of our project in Fiji, we need to raise $15,000 to pay for building materials and travel expenses.
Please help us make this kindergarten a reality and donate to the Fiji Kindergarten Project! We truly appreciate your support.
